Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam This is the first step in the herbicide loading system. The spray comes in to us in 50 gal. Drums and is pumped into 5000 gallon tanks (foreground). The Vietnamese Air Force people handle all of this as it is essentially their program-they must approve all targets, etc.

U.S.A.F. flyer, standing inside decontamination bubble, wearing full protective clothing. Imagine living and fighting in such an environment against an enemy who does not have to fear retaliation from toxic agents. I regret my film was not fast enough to take a good picture.

During 1968 the UC-123s of the 12th Special Operations Squadron (Ranch Hand) were modified to add two J-85 jet engines outbound of the reciprocating engines. This modification provided a much-needed safety factor for the shot at flying squadron in SEA. Up to Jan. 1, 1969 Ranch Hand planes had been hit more than 3500 times by enemy ground fire.

Mountainous target areas call for exacting flying from Ranch Hand crews. Enemy-udes roads and trails must be opened up to aerial reconnaissance to halt trrop infiltrations, supplies and to reduce ambushes. The herbicide is most effective when sprayed from a 50-100 foot altitude above the foliage and contour flying in formation in mountain areas with a slow somewhat cumbersome aircraft often resembles a roller coaster ride.

Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam; The planes have been backed up to the tanks for refill. There are only four refill positions so when they are filled the planes are taxied to their parking spots and four more are backed in until all are set to go again. We can refill tanks, refuel with gas and be in the air in less than 30 minutes if necessary.
