Images from an emotional era. I'm sharing these personal images and thoughts in the hope they will help bring the Vietnam war into better perspective for those who may only know the war as event, in a parade of historical events, without human faces or emotions. For me, Vietnam was surrealistic-awesome natural beauty, friendly people, PXs, R&R-mixed up with the fear, noise and confusion of combat. I took some of these pictures in 1964, the rest in 1968 when I returned for my second tour of duty there as a helicopter pilot. I did not take photographs of dead or wounded and I hope my obscene mental images of the gore fades with time.
