Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr. Collection: General Articles (620) Finding Aid
Item Number: 6200000000   (Click For More Item Information)
 Collection

This series is 7.5 linear feet. This series deals with articles both by and about Admiral Zumwalt. Some articles express Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Zumwalt's repeated warnings that the Soviet Navy had surpassed the United State Navy in combatant capabilities. Further, several articles address Admiral Zumwalt's statements concerning the Australian, New Zealand, and United States Treaty (ANZUS). Articles after Admiral Zumwalt's retirement and his unsuccessful bid for the Senate seat from Virginia, demonstrate his criticism of trends he saw in Defense procurement, especially the tendency toward increasingly large and sophisticated, and more expensive, weapons platforms. There are also articles about his family, especially Mouza's efforts during the campaign. Articles in this series also refer to Lt. Col. Zumwalt (Admiral Zumwalt's father) including a couple of letters from the European Theater in 1945.

This single-box series deals primarily with the controversy over 'Gulf War Syndrome' (GWS) and its similarities to the Agent Orange Controversy. There were numerous possible contributors to the pathologies of GWS: possible chemical/biological agents deployed by Saddam Hussein during the conflict, especially organophosphates-based agents, the environmental pollution Hussein created by setting the oil fields ablaze, endemic biological threats from the region, the depleted-Uranium (DU) ordinance used by American forces, and the experimental vaccine against Anthrax with which American forces were inoculated. The experiences of Jim Zumwalt's Marine unit during the war are also treated. Also significant is renewed interest in what came to be referred to as War Syndrome(s) and the Healthy Warrior Effect.
