Coan's service in the Vietnam Conflict in the United States Navy with Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron 3 Seawolves (HAL-3) in Vietnam, May 1970 - July 1971, and his involvement in post-war reunions. Materials date from both the war and post-war periods. Some photographs are in poor condition, with the bulk of the rest of the collection in good condition.

Four CD-ROMs contain photographs from Elihu Carranza's service in the Vietnam War in 1966-1967 with Company C, 7th Motor Transportation Battalion, United States Marine Corps. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of a page from the 4 January 1967 edition of Sea Tiger, a publication of III Marine Amphibious Force, containing a picture of Carranza. The collection also includes three sketches drawn by Carranza which depict children in Vietnam, a ship, and a logo for 'Company C' which are all signed by the artist.
