Shirley Johnson Collection (1003) Finding Aid

This collection contains letters from President Nixon, and the United States Air Force (USAF) to Mrs. Johnson regarding the status and condition of her husband, Major Samuel Johnson, after he was shot down over North Vietnam. Major Johnson, now a U.S. Respresentative from Texas, was held captive in a prison in Hanoi for seven years. These letters also indicate to her the measures taken by the USAF and the Nixon Administration to locate its personnel who had been listed as MIAs (Missing In Action) or POW (Prisoner Of War). NOTE: Researchers wanting access to boxes 13-16 must contact archival staff prior to arrival in Lubbock, due to condition of materials.

In addition the collection includes letters of the League of Families (an association formed by the families of MIAs and POWs) and those from the North Vietnamese Government giving concessions on family-packages to captured personnel.

The collection date ranges from 1966 to 1972. The collection includes numerous newspaper articles about Col. Sam Johnson as a POW and Mrs. Johnson's involvement in trying to secure his and other POWs release, and Sam Johnson's post-war political career. There is also a wide assortment of other documents regarding POWs/MIAs including Hearings Before the Subcommittee on National Security, newspaper and magazine articles, form letters for POWs to send overseas to family, newsletters, press releases, photocopied magazine articles, and fact sheet about POWs and MIAs.

Photographs captured from the Viet Cong document military training and medical activities, while photographs taken by Don Jellema and the 69th Signal Battalion document damaged aircraft, automobiles, buildings, and additional U.S. military activity in Saigon. The collection also contains 247 slides taken by Jellema while he was with the 69th Signal Battalion.

Slides, audiotapes, five 8mm film reels (about 2000 ft) and an artifact document Jolliff's service in DASPO, from 1970-1971. Audio recordings include Jolliff describing his work on a films for DASPO, street sounds of Saigon, a conversation with a 16 year old neighbor in Saigon, all recorded in 1970, and 'letters' to and from home, recorded 1970-1971. Slides document a soldier's trip to Bangkok in 1970, Korea, including the DASPO compound in Seoul, 1971, daily life for the Vietnamese in Saigon, 1970, Australian and American military, an art museum in Da Nang, daily life in Hue, and a marketplace in Vietnam City. The artifact is a water canteen used by Jolliff in 1970. Also present in the collection are eight books in the The VIetnam Experience series. The five reels of 8mm film includes footage of Vietnam and possible footage of Korea, Thailand, India, Nepal, a Mt. Everest avalanche, and Afghanistan, 1971.
