Akins's career in the United States Army Air Corps and Air Force. Military administrative documents include U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group documents, U.S. Air Force Special orders, personnel records, and individual flight records, created during the 1940s and 1950s. The photographs in the collection, taken by Akins while serving in Europe, document World War II and the Holocaust. Akins also collected magazine articles, newspaper clippings, and photographs related to the entertainment career of his sister, Future Akins, in the 1950s and 1960s.

The interviews were conducted from 04 June 1991 to 30 October 1992 and include interviews with Major General John L. Borling, Major General William J. Breckner and Brigadier General Jon A. Reynolds. The donation of this collection was made possible by Brigadier General Joseph Potter.

'The Catalyst' was an underground newspaper printed by Texas Tech Students to support the local liberal/radical scene. The newspaper covered issues such as the war in Vietnam, student protests, racism and civil rights, women's rights, homosexuality and the governance and faculty of Texas Tech University. The paper also featured political cartoons, movie and music reviews and local editorials and advertisements. Issues available are dated 1969 to 1971.
