Phillips III's service in Southeast Asia in the 1950s and 1960s first with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as part of Edward Lansdale's operation, and later with the United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) U.S. Operations Mission (USOM), Office of Rural Affairs. The documents date from 1952 through 1967, with the bulk being from 1962 through 1967, and include information on South Vietnamese provinces; the structure of the South Vietnamese government; and papers on pacification, rural development, and the Viet Cong. Photographs date from mid-1950s to early 1960s.

Book 'Journey Back From Vietnam: One Soldier's Long Road Home From War' written by Wayne Purinton. The book is about Purinton's service in Vietnam and his recovery efforts from PTSD and humanitarian efforts educating children in Vietnam.

Also contains approximately .5 linear foot of correspondence from Wayne Purinton to his family at home. The majority of the letters are addressed to his parents; however, some are to his brothers, Chuck, Ron and Eddie. Contained in the letters are a homemade Mother's day card Purinton sent, as well as a description of the start of Operation Pershing. Wayne Purinton was in Vietnam with C Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry from April 1967 to March, 1968.

There is also a handmade notebook and some loose pages containing Vietnamese writing, a typed page listing the operations that Presgrove participated in from November 1968 to July 1969 and a sheet from the 3rd Medical Battalion detailing the treatment given to Presgrove when he was wounded on February 23, 1969.

Less than a quarter of a linear foot of manuscript material comprising a tribute book for USAF (United States Air Force) pilot Colonel Wayne Wolfkeil put together by Joe Parnar and Robert Dumont. The volume contains the story and images of Col. Wolfkeil, his crash in Laos, and the Bright Light SAR (Search and Rescue) operations undertaken by the SOG (Special Operations Group) personnel, including the one led by Sfc. George (Wilson) Hunt of Spike Team Maine that reached the crash site two weeks later. Also included are copies of the documents Mrs. Anne Wolfkeil received from the military regarding the search for her husband and his official MIA/KIA status; his biographical entry from the P.O.W. Network website, a letter his son David wrote about his father to a reporter for the Northwest Florida Daily News in 2010, and an article on Col. Wolfkeil by Gordie Jones appearing in Lancaster (PA) Online in 2013. Also included in the collection is a published book written by Jerry Krizan and Robert Dumont entitled 'Bac Si: A Green Beret Medic's War in Vietnam. The book is the story of Sergeant Jerry Krizan, a medic assigned to Special Forces Camp A-331 in the III Corps tactical zone, 10 miles from the Cambodian border.

Less than a quarter of a linear foot of an essay, a book, and an inclusion in the book. The essay is titled 'General William E, Depuy: His Relief of Subordinates In Combat,' written by Henry G. Cole. The book is 'Dusterman Vietnam: Story of the Last Great Gunfighters: Transcripts from My Vietnam Diary and Memoirs' by Joseph M. Belardo. Joseph Belrado was the United States Army 1st Field Force, Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 44th Artillery, Mobile Combat Team, Body Recovery Combat Attachment to the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force, 3rd Marine Division from August 1967 to August 1968. The inclusion in his book is titled 'Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 44th Artillery- Combat and Body Recovery.'

Also includes approximately 67 linear feet of documents, books, microforms, photographs, slides, moving images, periodicals, and a museum object donated to the archive by Philip C. Gutzman. Gutzman used these materials to write three reference books on the Vietnam War: Vietnam: a Visual Encyclopedia, Vietnam: Naval and Riverine Weapons, and the Dictionary of Military Acronyms. The collection contains excellent reference material on all topics and time periods of the Vietnam War and would be useful for scholars as well as military veterans looking for official military documentation and battle accounts.

The books in the collection contain many useful reference manuals on military weapons and equipment. The documents in the collection cover a wide variety of formats: military reports like Operation Reports – Lessons Learned and After Action Reports, study and analysis papers written by scholars and research institutions like the RAND Corporation, military training documents, special reports, bibliographies, and Department of the Army field manuals. They came from a variety of institutions like the Army War College, the National Archives, the U.S. military, RAND Corporation, the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), and Philip Gutzman’s own service in the Marine Corps and Vietnam War,

These materials cover the time period from the Viet Minh and the First Indochina War through the end of the Vietnam War with the bulk of the material dating from 1960 through 1975. Major topics or subjects covered by these materials are: insurgency/counterinsurgency, Special Forces, prisoners of war, herbicides/defoliation, psychological warfare, tactical air support, tank warfare, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Montagnards and Vietnam’s ethnic minorities, naval and riverine operations, military slang and terminology, Vietnamization, terrorism, the Viet Cong, guerilla warfare, refugees, military weapons and weapons systems, nuclear weaponry, pacification, military medicine and first aid, logistics and support, and reports and analysis of various battles of the Vietnam War.
