Task Force Oregon: Richard T. Knowles, Major General, U.S. Army, Commanding, June-August 1967

Photographs, press releases, fact sheets, and news clippings from Knowles time as Commanding General of Task Force Oregon from June to August 1967. Photographs include Knowles' command photograph as well as one of him receiving the Legion of Merit. Photographs of the Task Force's staff include depictions of Knowles presenting awards and promoting officers. Other photographs depict the ceremony for the completion of Highway 1 at Sa Huynh.
The Visitors section shows the Task Force being visited by dignitaries such as Ambassador Robert Koren, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, General William Westmoreland, General Earle Wheeler, Sergeant Major William Wooldridge, General Harold Johnson, Lieutenant General Robert Cushman, General Wallace Greene, General Creighton Abrams.
The Milestones section includes photos of Knowles ramming the 200,000th artillery round fired by the Task Force. There are also sections dedicated to the Task Force's composite brigades--including 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne conducting Operation Hood River and Operation Malheur, the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, and 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. Photographs from these sections show troops on combat operations and providing medical aid to Vietnamese civilians. Also of interest are photographs of Knowles with a smiling fourteen-year-old PAVN soldier named Phan Van Thin.

Knowles is shown receiving the Distinguished Service Medal, awarded for his time in Korea as the Commanding General of I Corps (ROK/US) Group and Deputy Commanding General of the Eighth Army. Most of the photographs show General Knowles conversing and shaking hands with various dignitaries and senior military officers from the Republic of Korea - including Minister of National Defense Suh Jyong Chul, General Han Shin, General Ro Jae Hyun, Vice Admiral Hwang Chong Yon, General Ock Man Ho, General Choi Se In, General Bak Won Kun, General Kim Il Hwan, Dr Shim Moon Taik, and others.

Photographs are of ceremonies, meetings, and social events involving Knowles, including Change of Command, award, and promotion ceremonies. Many of the photographs show Knowles meeting with officers from the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army. Other photographs depict Knowles meeting with American officers and visiting troops during training exercises and at guard posts near the Demilitarized Zone. Also included is a photograph of Knowles with ROK President Park Chung Hee, and a photo of Knowles with General Lee Sae Ho, former commander of ROK forces in Vietnam. General Knowles is also shown in Japan, meeting with staff officers of the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF). Another photograph shows Knowles meeting with National Football League (NFL) players including Franco Harris and Jack Youngblood, as well as Ambassador Philip Habib.
