Marines 1967: Operation County Fair
Moving Image Item Number: 998VI0533

  • NOT DIGITIZED
[Number of Pages: 0]
Produced by the Marine Corps, this video provides a retrospective review of Marine Corps activities worldwide in 1967 with emphasis on the expanding Marine Corps mission in Vietnam. At the start of this film, Marines are seen traversing through vegetated mountainous country, across open rice paddies, as they take the war to the enemy. Scenes in this video include: Amtrak's moving up a Vietnamese river; Marines fighting from their AMTRAK as others fight dismounted next to theirs. During 1967 Marine Corps operations extended over the length of Vietnam. From the Mekong Delta where the Marine Corps conducted operation Deckhouse in January, to the demilitarized where the ongoing Operation Prairie continued until late May, the Marines fought in operations far too numerous in 1967 to name them all. While out at Khe Sanh in northeastern Quang Tri Province, in what was then known as the hill fights for Hills 861 and 881, Marines are seen attacking one of the hills, others are seen taking a ridge line, as another marine is seen neutralizing a North Vietnamese bunker. From machine guns to Mule mounted 106mm recoilless rifles, to fighter aircraft the support given to the attacking Marines is seen. The videos also includes the May 31 change of command ceremony where Lieutenant General Lewis W. Walt relinquishes command of the III Marine Amphibious Force to Lieutenant General Robert E. Cushman, Jr. With headquarters at Da Nang, the III Marine Amphibious Force was the senior United States command in I Corps. Other video clips include, civil action activities underway, F-4 Phantoms arriving in Vietnam from the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California. Plus, there are views of UH-34, CH-53, and CH-46 helicopters in various actions. Shifting, the film looks at the month long September-October fight at Con Thien along the demilitarized zone in the 3d Marine Division's Kingfisher area. The marine position on Hill 158 is seen taking incoming North Vietnamese fire as a Marine LVTH-6Al returns fire. While most of the fighting occurred some distance from Con Thien, the footage captures for the viewer the essence of that position. For one month in 1967 the press focused world attention on the fighting, and it became known as the siege of Con Thien. With a kaleidoscope of footage other Marine Corps activities outside of Vietnam are portrayed such as, the 25 anniversary ceremonies commemorating the battle of Guadalcanal; scenes of General Holland M. 'Howling Mad' Smith's funeral in San Diego; Marines undergoing cold weather training in Scandinavia; and Marines on duty at the United States Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada. President Lyndon B. Johnson attends the Marine Corps 192nd birthday as well as, Camp Pendleton's 25th Anniversary ceremonies. Operation County Fair: Produced in 1967 by the Marine Corps, this film examines the Corps' County Fair Operations in South Vietnam, its goals and objectives through the combined action of Marine Corps and local South Vietnamese officials and troops. Started in 1966 south of, Da Nang by the 9th Marines, County Fair was essentially a fairly elaborate cordon and search effort with the objective of breaking down the infrastructure of the Viet Cong, the local force cells of guerrillas who remained behind when main force units left an area, and continued to dominate the life of a hamlet. In the opening scenes, the deceptively innocent looking Vietnamese countryside is seen with peasants tending their rice paddies. Marines are seen advancing. An 0-1 observation aircraft circles overhead telling the villagers that their village is surrounded and for them to stay in their homes and do as their told. Villagers are seen walking to a collection point as a Marine moves to corral stray cattle as other Marines are seen erecting tents at the collection point. As the County Fair picks up tempo Vietnamese officials are seen screening the villagers and checking their papers and weeding out the Viet Cong within them, before issuing new identification cards. We next see the villagers undergoing indoctrination as a former Viet Cong agent tells why he quit the Viet Cong and how the government's Chieu Hoi program helped him start a new life. The villagers next watched informational films and listened to lectures by government officials. Villagers are given medical aid by Navy corpsmen and Vietnamese doctors and nurses. In addition to medical treatment, they also received dental care. The people were given a bar of soap paid for by the Marine Corps Reserve Care Program. As the parents are watching films and listening to lectures, the children are led away to sing songs and play games as members of the security force watches from a distance. The focus of the film shifts to the Marine Corps blocking forces which is seen searching for bunkers, tunnels, and the ever elusive Viet Cong. Eventually Marines make contact with a Viet Cong force and a fire fight ensues. A VMFA 323 F-4 Phantom is seen enroute to the target area while both F-4 and A-4 Skyhawk aircraft are seen striking the enemy positions. After the fire fight, the Marines move to the enemy's position and captured Viet Cong are seen. The Marines continue to stalk the Viet Cong as Vietnamese troops and police concentrate on searching the hamlet. In this particular village, they found Viet Cong had stored rice collected in nearby villages. Bagged, it was subsequently loaded onto Marine Corps CH-34 helicopters, to be flown back to the people it was taken from. Seen too is the 3d Marine Division field band which puts on a concert for the villagers' pleasure. As County Fair draws to a close, both the villagers and most of the troops are seen leaving. But a Marine Corps, Combined Action Company, stays behind to defend this village with local forces.
