Rear Admiral Frank W. Vannoy Interview -The Amphibious Force
Audio Item Number: 992AU0686
In this audio file, Kris Harris conducts and interview with Rear Admiral Frank W. Vannoy, Commander of the Amphibious Force of the Seventh Fleet and Task Force 76. They discuss the role and the composition of an amphibious forces in the American arsenal and in the Vietnam conflict. The United States began the Vietnam conflict with an initial amphibious landing of 1,400 U.S. Marines in South Vietnam on 8 March 1965. The three primary forms of amphibious attack are 1: Secure and Hold, 2: Coordinated Operation, and 3: Amphibious Raid. Regardless of the type of tactic, the purpose of an amphibious operation is to place U.S. resources ashore in unfriendly territory by exploiting the speed, mobility, and flexibility of sea power. The goal is to disrupt the enemy's capabilities and to operate

Lieutenant David O. Carter, U.S. Marine Corps Interview
Audio Item Number: 992AU0555
Interviewee: Lieutenant David O. Carter, USMC Interviewer: Staff Sergeant John T. McDaniel, USMC Lieutenant Carter was in Vietnam from December 25, 1967 to April 17, 1968, and he was platoon commander, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. When Lt. Carter arrived in Vietnam his unit was deployed in the Hue area and their mission was search and destroy at Camp Evans. His unit participated in little activity beyond platoon activity. He questions why Khe Sanh was not properly dug in prior to the Tet Offensive. Marine Corps morale was very high during the Khe Sanh siege. Supplies were scarce but every attempt was made to improve supplying. The supporting artillery and air support was very necessary. His unit led the breakout from Khe Sanh and moved to Hill 471 and link up with incoming units. Heavy fighting occurred at Hill 471 between his unit and the North Vietnamese Marines resulting in casualties on both sides and several prisoners taken by the U.S. Marines. Following Hill 471 the platoon moved to Hill 552 hoping to trap the North Vietnamese. Platoon walked the ridgeline to Hill 689. Lt. Carter speaks highly of the M-16, the only problem being that it needs constant cleaning. Lt. Carter speaks of his observations of the enemy, their supplies, and their tactics. Lt. Carter speaks of new recruits needing map skills and better understanding of tactics.

First United States Combat-Troop Reduction in Vietnam - The first US combat-troop reduction in South Vietnam, 25,000 men, announced by Presidents Thieu and Nixon at their Midway Island conference in June, began with the vanguard departures of 800 US army infantrymen and 1,300 marines. The 25,000 troop redeployment will be completed by the end of August, and their mission in the republic absorbed by South Vietnamese forces.

On July 8 the soldiers departed from Saigon Airport after ceremonies attended by President Nguyen Van Thieu, Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky, American Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker, ministry and military staff chiefs. Before boarding a fleet of 'Starlifter' jet transports for the United States, the homebound infantrymen were cheered by crowds of grateful Vietnamese citizens, whose representatives presented the soldiers with flower lais and souvenir gifts. At Da Nang on July 14, the marines' ceremonies were presided over by General Hoang Xuan Lam, Commander of South Vietnam's Armed Forces.
