Contentment in Le My: ; Le My, South Vietnam: an atmosphere of relative peace and security has returned to the village of Le My. ; For the first time in many years communist Viet Cong guerrillas will not collect their heavy 'rice taxes'. For the first time in many seasons, a thriving village market is open, children attend school, and there is medical help for the sick.; What brought about this change in Le My was the arrival of a battalion of United States Marines in May, 1965. The Americans are now protecting an area of about 100 square miles in which some 20,000 Vietnamese villagers live. 'This was strongly-- held Viet Cong territory,' explains Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel David Clement. 'But today the Viet Cong do not feel at ease around here. They are not welcome.' ; With the harsh Viet Cong control broken, a hopeful new atmosphere of security has taken hold in the valley. Refugees are returning to their homes. Long idle land is being tilled once again. ; Said one villager: 'We hope

Village Search & Viet Cong Booby Traps

[Number of Pages: 0]
Fleet Marine Force Village Search Produced by the Marine Corps in 1967, this video details the methods and techniques employed by Marines in Vietnam when conducting village and hamlet search and clear operations. The film takes the viewer along with a Marine force preparing to search and clear a village. Join in and listen to the background information they receive from the briefing officer. With dense lush green vegetation for a background, the search force, having been divided into teams, prepares to enter the village. Watch as the reconnaissance team covered by the fire support team clears the route into the village. When ready, the search team enters the village and searches all suspected Viet Cong cache and hiding spots, including thatched roofs and walls of the villagers homes, as well as, livestock pen. Burial grounds of the villagers are also searched. The command group only enters the village when positive control is assured. Marines search all villagers for weapons. Marines are seen exercising caution when approaching possible Viet Cong booby traps. Villagers are seen being photographed for identification cards. As all of this is going on inside the village, a reserve force remains outside, ready to react to any overt act. Fleet Marine Force Mines And Booby Traps This film, produced by the Marine Corps in 1967, details the type of mines employed by the Viet Cong against the United States Marines and the measures necessary to detect such mines, and the consequences of missing one. The video talks about the Viet Cong's favorite places to mine, roads, sandy ground, helicopter landing zones, fence gates, rice paddy dikes, hedgerows, footbridges, cemeteries, and trails leading into the jungle. Information and film clips on types of material they employ, such as bamboo which they used to construct punji pits with sharpened bamboo covered with-urine and excrement to cause. Also includes example of simple bullet traps, shoe box mines, nail pressure grenade mines, various uses of hand grenades, and mortar and artillery shells. This film stresses the need for the Marine to stay constantly on the alert and watch for Viet Cong warning signs and take the appropriate action to dispose of mines when found. There is film footage of Marine engineers blowing up various types of Viet Cong mines. In addition, an amphibious tractor battalion LVTE-1 (Landing Vehicle Tracked Engineer] is seen plowing its way through a dry rice paddy. And throughout the film, Marines are filmed encountering enemy mines.
