USS Independence
Moving Image Item Number: 998VI0561
This two part color video shows the operation of U.S. Navy aircraft and their carriers. 'Ready on Arrival' is taken primarily on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA 62) as U.S. carriers keep the peace throughout the world. There are scenes of many catapult launches and arrested landings by Intruder, Skyhawk and Phantom aircraft. Manned by a crew of 4,500, the carrier's engine room operations with its four engines is shown, along with the bakery, laundry, dental office and others which make up the city afloat. Prior to leaving its home port, the ship is resupplied and aircraft are loaded on board. It leaves on deployment to Yankee Station off Vietnam. Hawkeye aircraft become the ship's early warning system, and VF-41 planes take off. USS VESUVIUS (AE 15) provides underway ammunition replenishment to the carrier. This film was produced by Grumann Aircraft in cooperation with the U.S. Navy. 'U.S. Navy - Face of a Nation' is about the attack aircraft carrier and its 6 squadrons of 90+ planes. Scenes are from several carriers as they catapult A4 and F4 aircraft off the ship. Hangar deck operations with the maintenance of planes are shown. Aircraft are recovered, refueled, and reamed for the next launch. VF 41 and CAW 7 planes are shown. The Landing Signal Officer (LSO) evaluates pilots' landings after they return to the ship. The carrier's defense capabilities include fighters, radar picket planes, and long-range shipboard radar in addition to the Navy Tactical Data System (NTDS). Scenes of USS RANGER (CVA 61) and its aircraft during the Korean War are shown. World-wide carrier operations from 1955-1964 are highlighted. This film was produced by the U.S. Navy, Chief of Information. reviewed by Cmdr. Al Grobmeier, U.S.N. (Ret.)

A Day in Vietnam
Moving Image Item Number: 998VI0596
This film produced in 1967 by the Marine Corps examines the Marines early commitment in Vietnam's I Corps. Throughout the film the Marines air-ground team is viewed together achieving success on the battlefield and singularly in their individual operations. The Marines landed at Da Nang in March 1965 and by 1967 they were conducting ground combat operations in all five provinces of the ten-thousand square mile corps. The footage is up-close and personal as grunts close, with the enemy as lst Marine Air Wing aircraft strike targets in both North and South Vietnam. Join grunts possibly members of the 7th Fleet's Special Landing Force aboard an amphibious assault ship as they board Uh-34 helicopters. Other Marines are seen coming ashore in LVTA5 AMTRAKS and LCUS. See an AMTRAC advancing in dense vegetation. Throughout the film the action is hot. Marines are seen attacking across open rice paddies as the cracking sound of small arms and the heavy staccato of machine gun fire is heard. A wounded man is helped as the attack presses forward. In this film is footage and clips of virtually every aircraft the Marines had in Vietnam plus some of the Navy's also. See UH-46, UH-1 Huey, CH-37 Mojave, and CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. See A-4 Skyhawks and F-4 Phantom jets. Pilots of Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA 363 are seen hurrying to get into the cockpit of their F-4's. There is also some good enroute and bombing footage from Phantoms also. While fifty miles south of Da Nang at Chu Lai where marine Air Groups 12 and 13 operated there is extensive footage of the SATS airstrip constructed by Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 10 in 1965. The SATS's AM-2 matting runway was complete with catapult and arresting gear. See an A-4 Skyhawk of Light Attack Squadron VMA 311 being catapulted from the 'tinfoil' runway as another A-4 is seen landing into the arresting gear. The Chu Lai footage is very good quality. In addition the film contains excellent 7th Fleet footage of its ships and the carrier Kitty Hawk CVA 63 conducting air operations. Among the naval aircraft pictured are P2V Neptune Patrol Planes, A-4 Skyhawks, A-7 Corsairs, A-3 Skywdirailors and SH-3 Sea Knight helicopters.
