Marines in Vietnam
Audio Item Number: 992AU0573
This is a recording of several members of a platoon singing and recounting events during combat. A Marine corpsman is playing his guitar. The platoon has several theme songs (one to raise morale before going out into the field, another for a Hispanic Marine in the platoon, etc.). Between the singing, the Marines discuss recent events and problems with their equipment. Six Marines joke about being scared when they heard warnings over the radio about a company of VC in their area. They tell the interviewer that they carry very substantial amounts of ammunition and claim that they would be able to hold off a regiment of VC. They complain that 40 of the 60 LAW rockets that have been fired in the last month have misfired. They find the Vietnamese women very unattractive (claiming that this discounts the image of Americans as rapists) and believe that most have VD. They also believe that two beers a day for each Marine would boost morale. They don't trust the ARVN and state that they are cowards. Two of the Marines were leading an ARVN unit when they ran into a sniper. The ARVN soldiers ran away and refused to move when they were found.
