- SIDE A Letter from Specialist 5 George Jolliff to home 12 November 1970
Mr. Jolliff was serving in Honolulu, Hawaii at this time. He tells his family that he has applied for leave over Christmas and discusses travel plans and the people he wants to see. He says in the last few weeks he has had a few adventures, and went exploring on the islands with a friend and their Canadian girlfriends. Earlier on the 12th he had visited the Polynesian Gardens and talks about that trip. Mr. Jolliff is distracted by the radio news, where something to do with the Black Panthers is being discussed and he mentions the isolation of Hawaii and the effect that has on news. He asks questions based on the last letters he received from home and then is distracted by the radio again. He holds the recorder to radio where there is a discussion of the proposed National Service Bill of 1970. There are more personal comments and then he discusses the work he has done. He comments that he was supposed to be filming soldiers coming from Vietnam, but that has not happened yet, and mentions Nixon's responsibility there. He completed a film on the Blue Angels and the Golden Knights stays in Hawaii. He discusses admission to Syracuse University and MU and his decision to obtain a MS in documentary film-making. He gives the family the nations he will be assigned for the next few months, and some financial plans. After this he mostly discusses the family and personal events that have been happening. There is also an interval where there is just the radio music playing. He ends the letter with love, and looking forward to seeing them if he gets leave.
SIDE B (Recorded on a Sunday on the back of the tape 12 November 1970 recording from Mr. Jolliff.) The recorder was passed back and forth between family members and includes discussions of family events that occurred: birthday parties, football games and visits from friends and relatives. Susan gave a description of her birthday party and a discussion of a new family car. Family friends are also mentioned, including one who is the hospital recovering and now has some feeling in his legs and they were hoping for more improvement. They report that his sisters already have his leave completely planned, and they are sharing him, although part of his leave might be cleaning out his car and updating the license because the car hasn't been driven. George's father discusses obtaining a transcript from SMS, and information on land. The two girls sing a couple of songs into the tape, then they all say how much they miss him and are looking forward to seeing him.
