General Note
Photo series, 'Raising An Giang's Living Standards' -- Photo #1: Some 4,000 An Giang farmers this year will be trying the Philippines' IR-8 'miracle' rice for the first time. Unlike the one-crop-a-year floating or 'indigo' rice, which can be broadcast in the paddies, IR-8 must be transplanted by hand after 20 days in the seed bed. Here farmers of My Thoi village draw lines in the mud so the transplanted rice plants can be equally spaced, 25 centimeters apart. An Giang farmers can experiment with this new crop because of a supervised credit program offering low-cost farm credit. (1) P68-0022/25
