General Note
Produced by Michael and Julia Phillips and directed by maverick filmmaker Martin Scorsese, 1976's Taxi Driver ushered in a new era of graphic moviemaking as social criticism. Paul Schrader's gritty screenplay depicts the ever-deepening alienation of Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro in a tour-de-force performance), a psychotic cab driver who obsessively cruises the mean streets of Manhattan. Powered by Bernard Herrmann's lush, chillding score, and featuring a stellar supporting cast including Jode Foster, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, Albert Brooks and Cybill Shepherd, Taxi Driver is a seamless and provocative portrayal of the nightmarish disintegration of a wounded American psyche.
