General Note
1LT. John N. Main, 1st Cav Armor. Much to John's surprise his commander made John an Infantry platoon leader. On John's first air assault his unit took numerous casualties. He protested to his commander that he had no infantry training and was unsuited to the task. Furthermore, he told his commander that any lives lost in his platoon were the commander's direct responsibility. John was so forceful in his argument that he was transferred to guard a hilltop radar station. Subsequently, John was transferred to an armored unit at Chu Lai. John and I had gone to graduate school together and spent many an evening in Chu Lai having more than our share of alcohol. John traveled in style in Vietnam. He carried an air mattress, battery powered boom box, bottles of Jonnie Walker Black and Jack Daniels Black, plus a pound or two of incense in his duffle bag. John was the sole Vietnam sales representative for Brother Francis Incense.
