General Note
Artist's conception of the 700-passenger C5A aircraft in flight. U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamera announced recently that the Lockheed company has been awarded a contract to produce 58 of the huge planes for the U.S. Air Force and the Military Air Transport Service (MATS). The C5A, expected to become operational in 1969, is designed to fly from continent to continent at jet speed, and to land on short, support area fields. It will carry twice the gross tonnage of the largest military plane now in service.
