Bibliography

After a bitter struggle lasting 117 years, Viet Nam is again completely independent and reunified. She proclaimed herself a Socialist Republic on July 2, 1976, and right at her birth the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam reiterated the choice of Hanoi as capital of the country.

Hanoi has a history stretching back a thousand years. In 1010, it was chosen as the capital of a centralized feudal state and was called Thang Long (City of the Soaring Dragon). It became the political and cultural centre of our country, the soul of all our movements for liberation and national resistance.

In this issue of Vietnamese Studies we have tried to give a sketch of Hanoi from her beginnings to the French conquest in the 19th century. The contemporary history of the city will be dealt with in later publications.
