General Note: Ph.D. scholarship participant Tran Ngoc Phat corresponds with Director Elsie Cunningham and her secretary Nancy Maddalozzo from the beginning of January to the end of February, 1960. The initial letter from Phat to Cunningham is gripping, in which Phat discusses the love he has come to obtain for the American people and their way of life, and how, on reflection, this has left him with many questions concerning his own people and their world view. They continue on uninterrupted to discuss book orders, per diem check payments, Phat's return to East Lansing, and his course progress.
