- General Note
- Ph.D. training participant Tran Ngoc Phat corresponds with Dean Ruben Austin from early January to late May, 1961. They discuss Phat's recent visit to East Lansing, course progress, upcoming travel plans on the East Coast, per diem check payments, course schedule, potential dates for the completion of Phat's dissertation, housing issues, and study extensions. The final series of letters takes a different turn, when Phat writes that he can no longer ignore his family obligations in Vietnam and requests to be sent home.
