Creation: Majority of material found within 1968 - 1969- General Note
- The scrapbook contains photographs, citations, clippings, patches, ephemera, letters sent home from Vietnam from 1968-1969, memos regarding the Brave Eagle Coin and Army National Speakers Program, a can opener, and a data plate from a Russian Truck, as well as the following documents from the Department of the Army to WO1 Bobby Cormack: Special Orders, The Army Commendation Medal, General Orders - Award of the Air Medal with “V” Device, and General Orders - Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross. In addition, the scrapbook also contains a Safe Conduct Pass, a tag of the Vietnam Service Medal ribbon, a badge of the 188th Black Widow Aviation Company, and photographs taken by WO1 Doug Cooper at a citadel in Phu Bai.
The citations by direction of the President are the following: the Air Medal presented to WO1 Bobby Cormack, the Bronze Star Medal, and a citation by Direction of the Secretary of the Army: The Army Commendation Medal presented to Warrant Officer Bobby Cormack. The patches hold the following titles: Wing of the Eagle; Black Widow – C Company; Participant of War Games in Southeast Asia. There are also some images of South Vietnamese flag.
Also included is a story along with a scan of a photograph depicting Bobby Cormack and Doug Cooper on “A Real Helicopter Ride in Vietnam”.
The photographs show various shots including WO1 Bobby Cormack flying A/C 120 over Hue, Phu Bai, and Dong Tai; WO1 Bobby Cormack alongside Captain “Harvey” May, Bob Crow, “Crash” Crawford, Harvey Forsliund, and “Willis” Shaw; Bob Cormack in “Flight Suit” during the Coastal Dunes Operation of 1968; 51 Cal Exit on Bob Crow’s AC Unit at the DMZ; Command Assault; Machine Gun Fire and Burst in Water; shooting at a shark in the South China Sea; Sky Crane lifting CH-46 in I Corps; and Cobra AH-1G Black Hawk at Camp Evans.
The photographs show different details captured at LZ Sally: WO1 Douglas Cooper and WO1 Bobby Cormack after Awards Ceremony at LZ Sally; LZ Sally after the typhoon; LZ Sally holding captured Chi-com Sub readings; Image of Aircraft 120 at LZ Whip; Camp Evans Ammo Dump; Going up after Rocket Attack; LZ Sally Elevation 40ft; Eagles Nest Fire Support Base in background under small round cloud, elevation 4600 ft; LZ Sally Front porch sitters: WO1 Cormack and Captain Max Beebe; 101st ABN Rear Area “in processing” LZ Sally from altitude.
The following are the areas and places captured by aerial and base shots: Phu Bai, AH-1G Cobra on fire base airstrip in northern A Shau Valley; “Anvil” Area of Laos-Vietnam border FOB Mission; Da Nang Harbor; Da Nang Red Beach Area; PX Da Nang, Monkey Mountain in background; Rock Crusher “Play Peu” Jug Clark at Vung Tai Villa A Shau Valley; Khe Sanh Area, Camp Evans; Coastal flatlands west of Hue; District Headquarters at Quan Dien; Ornate graveyards and Shrine at Camp Eagle; Peasants working in fields at Camp Eagle; Peasant Graves at Camp Eagle; The “Elephant” or “Anvil” Border of Vietnam; Rice Paddies and Coastline of Hue; Special Forces Camp at Quang Tri on Christmas Day; SF Camp, Mai Loc, Northern I Corps - “Mountain Yard” Kids and Cormack; Ben Hai River in Eastern Laos; Craters and Bunkers in Jungle on Hillside; Vietnam highway known as “The Street Without Joy”.
Photographs also depict resupplying and extracting Marines on Hill 819 at Quang Tri; they have been out of food and water for a few days, not being resupplied in over a month.
Another set of photographs illustrates the following: Cormack’s Hooch he lived in while working for the Marine RECON at Quang Tri; Mar 1969, FOB Mission King Bee’s crossing into Laos on unsuccessful POW Rescue; FOB Mission New Years Day 1969; a DEROS Party; Marine APC starting to cross river at Cua Viet; Mai Loc SF Camp UH-1C gunship pilots: WO1 Sweeney, WO1 Cormack, Captain Max Beebe; UH-1H “Mr Lonely”; a Russian Truck destroyed on the Yellow Brick Road; Medi Vac 1969 Hamburger Hill, CW2 John Shirley; Fishermen with Nets at Da Nang, Marble Mountain in background; Northern I Corps Fisherman home at Song Bo / Perfume River; Psychological Operations at Coastal Area North of Hue, Phu Vang 1968; MACV Operation in Coastal Area North-East of Hue; 1969 Vung Tau Meat Market; July 1969, damaged Helicopters at Red Beach in Da Nang; Mai Loc SF Camp, L-R: Astro, Billy Budd, Doug Cooper with crossbow.
The black scrapbook measures 12 inches x 13.5 inches.
