Background
In July, 1967, Major General Robert R. Ploger, then commanding general, U.S. Army Engineer Command Vietnam, desired that a historical document be prepared to portray what the engineers had accomplished and what they are now doing in Vietnam. It was decided that the best way to do this would be by illustrations that would be reproduced in the form of a brochure and later exhibited in Vietnam and the United States. The information officer, Lieutenant Colonel Conrad T. Von Doran, was placed in charge of this project. Engineers with an interest in art were asked to submit a resume of their experience and examples of their art work. Ten artists were selected and brought to Bien Hoa, where they worked from the end of July through September. From their own engineering experience and sketches compiled from visiting hundreds of work sites throughout the country, more than 110 pieces of art work were completed. A panel of six judges then selected the art work that appears in this brochure.
