Scope and Contents

The collection consists of approximately two linear feet of materials consisting of documents, photographs, videos, and books accumulated by John Sciascia. The materials relate to Sciascia and his fellow Vietnam War dog handlers and include Vietnam Dog Handler Association newsletters and articles concerning the dedication of a War Dog Memorial; calling cards; memorial service programs; pamphlets; correspondence; and clippings. The materials are dated 1994-2017.

Biographical / Historical

John Sciascia was born in 1947 in Lackawanna, New York. In 1964, he volunteered for the United States Marine Corps and spent a total of four years in the military until his discharge in 1968. Twenty-seven months of his military career was served in Southeast Asia ranked as Private First Class and later Sergeant (E5). In 1965 he served with M Company 3rd Battalion 4th Marines in Hue, Phu Bai, and Danang, followed by A Company 1st Battalion 7th Marines in 1966, which was served in Chu Lai. Following this, Sciascia served with the Sentry/Scout Dogs in 1967/1968 in Danang, which was a 30-day assignment throughout I Corps. During Sciascia's active duty, he received the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Nay Unit Commendation, the Good Conduct Award, the Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After being discharged in 1968 with the ranking of sergeant (E5), Sciascia was a State Trooper for the Florida Highway Patrol and joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association (VFW), the Disabled American Veterans Association (DAV), and is currently the President of the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association.
