Scope and Contents

Thirteen CD-ROMS, materials on and the diaries of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, a 1962 Blue Book for Junks, a powerpoint presentation from a panel at the Vietnam Center's symposium in 2008, materials from the Defense Language Institute, a commemorative ship's wheel and 'Best Boat' flag, and 8 books document the service of Frederick Whitehurst and the life and thoughts of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, a former North Vietnamese female doctor who died during the Vietnam Conflict. 100 Strips of negatives document Robert Whitehurst's Service in Vietnam as a warrant officer with the 5th Heavy Boat Company, 159th Transportation Battallion, 4th Trasportation Command (4th TC), 1970- 1972. Articles concerning the premier of the movie Dun Dot (Don't Burn It). Slide boxes and a negative sleeve are also included with the artifacts.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Whitehurst was born on 10 March 1946 in Yorktown, Virginia. In November 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army for five years active duty and served in Vietnam from March 1970 to March 1972 with the 4th Transportation Company, 159th Battalion, 5th Heavy Boat. While in Vietnam, he was stationed at Cat Lai, Binh Thuy, and Saigon as a Chief Warrant Officer 1 and 2 as a Boat Captain and Harbor Master. He was awarded the Bronze Star before he was discharged and after the war he attended college and worked on Ocean tugboats and tows. He is not a member of any Vietnam Veterans Associations, but has recently signed-up to participate in the Oral History program here at the Vietnam Archive.
