Scope and Contents

VHS copy of 8mm film taken by James Emmer at Fort Hood (Texas) and during his 1968 tour of duty in Vietnam at LZ Gator and a copy of orders awarding the Combat Infantry Badge to individuals (including Emmer) from Company D, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, Americal Division. The film depicts Companies A-E of the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, Americal Division.

Biographical / Historical

James Emmer (17 October 1941-29 December 2014) was born in Kearny, New Jersey and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Emmer was drafted into the United States Army on 21 November 1966 and served a total of 2 years. This included 8 months (1968) in Vietnam as SP4 and then as E5 Sergeant and squad leader assigned to Company D, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry, 198th Light Brigade, Americal Division stationed at Landing Zone Gator, on Highway 1 nine miles south of Chu Lai. Emmer received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1968.

Emmer was a member of VFW Post 10118 (Forked River, New Jersey) and stayed in touch with members of his unit.
