Books, photographs and documents collected by William Howard during his tour of duty with the Military Sea Transportation Service, Far East.
Biographical / Historical
William Howard was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1942. Howard volunteered for the United States Navy in 1960 and served until 1964. He joined the Military Sea Transportation Service, Pacific as a civilian following college in 1969, transferring to the Far East branch in the his first year. While in the Military Sealift Command he helped operate the support ships of U.S. military forces and its allies. Howard was on ships for several years transporting cargo to Saigon, Vung Tau, Nha Trang, Qui Nhon, Da Nang, Cam Ranh Bay and parts of the Mekong Delta. His ships also operated into Kompong Som following the U.S. incursion into Cambodia. Howard also joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve from which he retired in December 2002.
