Biographical / Historical
Sidney B. Baird, Jr. joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1964 shortly after graduating high school to avoid being drafted into the Army. Following basic training at Paris Island, Baird learned avionics and worked on Lockheed C-130's at Cherry Point, NC as part of VMGR-252 until he was sent to Vietnam. In June 1967 Sgt. Baird went to Vietnam and was assigned to work on CH-46 helicopters as a Chief Electrician, later volunteering to fly as door gunner and crew chief during medivac missions. Baird served in HMM 165 and 265. During his tour of duty in Vietnam Baird was shot down twice but was not injured or captured. In June of 1968 Baird returned to the United States and left the military.
