In 1967, Hyde entered WORWAC (Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Candidate) 67-17 at Fort Wolters, TX and graduated with WORWAC 67-19 on 21 November 1967. Then Hyde departed Travis AFB for Long Binh, Vietnam, where he was processed and sent to Nha Trang for assignment. On 24 December 1967 he was assigned to the 170th Assault Helicopter Company at Camp Holloway and flew his first mission the next day. He flew 165 hours, primarily around Pleiku, Duc Co, Kontum, and Dak To through 7 February 1968, and then was wounded in a mortar attack on 10 February 1968 and med-evaced out. After recovery, Hyde became a ground school instructor (map reading) at the primary helicopter school at Fort Wolters, TX. After training, he was sent to the 146th AVN CO (RR) ('Radio Research' - Army Security Agency) based at Tan Son Nhut airport, Saigon. In January 1970, the 146th AVN CO (RR) was relocated to Long Thanh North AAF (Army Airfield), approximately 20 miles east of Saigon and just east of the Long Binh - Vung Tau highway. Hyde was honorably discharged in December 1970.
