Irvin Hugh (Butch) Hill volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps and underwent basic training at the San Diego Marine Recruit Depot Center (MRDC) and 2nd Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton. In July of 1968 Hill was sent to Vietnam, where he was assigned to 1st Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, near An Hoa, Vietnam. Hill was injured on 23 October 1968 in the Quang Nam Province and spent over one month recuperating on the USS Repose anchored in Da Nang Harbor. On 1 December 1968, Hill rejoined his unit at Phu Lac (6). On the 14th of January 1969, Hill was mortally wounded by a mine while on patrol in the Quang Nam Province. Hill's body was returned from Vietnam and he was buried in Seagraves, Texas, on 28 January 1969.- 1
