Biographical / Historical
John Gary Morris was born in 1942 in Houston, Texas and attended the University of Dallas before graduating from North Texas University in 1965. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended both Boot Camp and Officer Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. Morris served at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Camp Pendleton, California and Iwakuni, Japan, before arriving in Vietnam in 1967. While in Vietnam, he served for 13 months as a squad commander in counter-insurgency operations near 'Happy Valley' outside of Da Nang, and was promoted to the rank of Captain. After returning to the United States, Morris served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, retiring in 1999 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He remains active with veterans' organizations and is also an artist.
