Biographical / Historical
Robert Haley was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California. In 1959, he volunteered from the United States Navy, beginning a twenty-eight year long career. Three years of Haley's service was carried out in Southeast Asia. From 1960-1961, he served as Commander, Amphibious Group Three, embarked on the USS Estes (AGC-12) and then transferred to the USS Washtenaw County (LST-1166), 1962-1963. During this time, Haley was home ported in Yokosuka, Japan and was ranked as a Personnelman Second Class (PN2) at pay-grade E-5, serving as a supervisor of ship's office. In June 1962, Haley was involved in the Laos campaign and received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Medal for his service. In 1996, Haley retired as a chief personnelman (E-7) and has received his B.A. in History and an M.A. in Education from Stanford University. He is a teacher of History and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, which is open to all Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard veterans, no matter which war they were in.
