Winter Issue of Baylor and a 'Statement Made by Colonel Winkel on 14 November 2005 Concerning Actions on 14 November 1965 as Requested by the Command Chain' document Paul Winkel's 31 year career in the United States Army, particularly his role in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965.
Biographical / Historical
Paul Winkel entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1951 and entered the Army's West Point Preparatory School in July 1952. He graduated as a Second Lieutenant in 1956. During his 31-year Army career, Paul served in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, in Germany, and with NATO. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and also the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He served in the Pentagon on four Army staffs and with the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Paul retired from the Army in 1986 and is currently a candidate for the Medal of Honor.
