Biographical / Historical

Lloyd Brinkley Ramsey was born in Somerset, Kentucky in 29 May 1918. In 1940, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kentucky before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of infantry in the United States Army. He served at various posts during the end of World War II and was stationed at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and in North Africa during this time. After the end of the war, Ramsey attended Yale University, the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania before being assigned as the Deputy, and later Secretary, of the Joint Staff of the United Nationals Command and Far East Command. After a brief stint back in the United States as the commander of the 14th Infantry and the 1st Infantry Brigade from July 1957 to July 1959, Ramsey returned to the Far East as the United States Army Advisor to the Korean National Defense College until August 1960. Between this date and December 1968, Ramsey held various positions on United States soil before arriving in Vietnam as Deputy commanding General, Headquarters, 1st Logistical Command. Ramsey remained at this post until June 1969 when he became the Commanding General of the 23rd Infantry (Americal) Division until his return to the United States in April 1970. On 01 August 1974, Ramsey retired from his career in the United States Army as a Major General and received many citations, decorations, medals and badges, to include: Silver Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star with V and 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnamese National Order, 5th Class, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Distinguished Unit Badge and many more. After his service, Ramsey then became Chairman of the Board for McLean Savings and Loan in 1977 until his retirement in 1988, and was involved in the North Virginia Community Foundation, the Army Distaff Foundation, and the Third Infantry Division Memorial Committee. He has also participated in the Oral History Project at Texas Tech Unviersity.
