Scope and Contents

Maps of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, American and Viet Cong propaganda leaflets, Chieu Hoi passes, 19 May 1970 issue of the North Vietnamese newspaper Quan Giai Phong, and a February 2006 article from the Dallas Morning News were collected by Tom Cossaboom, who served a tour of duty in Vietnam from August 1969 to August 1970.

Biographical / Historical

Tom Cossaboom was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1944. In 1968, Cossaboom volunteered for the United States Army, beginning his 24 years of service. From 1969 through 1970, Cossaboom served in Southeast Asia with Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 11th Brigade, Americal Division as Assistant Brigade S-5 (PSYOPS, Civil Affairs), ranked first as a 2nd Lieutenant, then promoted to 1st Lieutenant. During this time, Cossaboom was stationed at Fire Support Base Bronco, Duc Pho, Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam. After his service in Vietnam, he served another 21 years in the Army Reserve until his discharge in 1992 as a Major. During this time, he returned to Graduate School and completed all but his dissertation for his PhD in Eastern European History, before accepting a position as an Air Force historian in the Civil Service. For his service in the US Army, Cossaboom received the following medals and citations: Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
