Biographical / Historical
Robert M. Ruiz was born in 1930 in Lockhart, Texas. In 1948 Ruiz volunteered for the army beginning 30 years of military service. During the Vietnam War Ruiz served with the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division from 1967 to 1968 and the 3rd Battalion, 187th Cavalry from 1970 to 1971. During the Vietnam War Ruiz held the positions of Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Leader, Operations Sergeant, and 1st Sergeant and was stationed at Bong Son and Phu Bai. For his service in Vietnam Ruiz was awarded the Combat Infantrymen's Badge, 4 Bronze Stars one with 'V' device, the Air Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. After his service in Vietnam Ruiz served Civilian Component Duty at the Military Science Department at Texas Tech University. Ruiz retired from military service in 1978 and is now active in the VFW.
