Biographical / Historical

Robert Lund flew combat missions against North Vietnam as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot. His tour of duty lasted from June 25, 1968 until July 25, 1969. Upon graduation from Holy Cross College in June 1966 Mr. Lund was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. The next five months were spent in Basic School at Quantico. Aviation training at Pensacola, Florida in 1967 followed this. After receiving fixed-wing and helicopter training he received his wings in February 1968. At the time the Marines employed four types of helicopters. The H-1, to which Lund was assigned, was used primarily as a gunship in support of transport helicopters and ground troops. The H-46, H-53, and H-34 were used to transport troops, supplies and equipment. Lieutenant Lund was then stationed at Jacksonville, North Carolina, until his departure for Vietnam in June 1968.
