One linear foot of articles, correspondence, medals and awards, citations, artifacts, slides, photographs and a 16mm film document Bill Long's service in the United States Army with the 1/61st in Vietnam from September 1968 until his death on 20 June 1969.

Biographical / Historical

William L. "Bill" Long was born in 1945. While attending Burges High School in El Paso, Texas, Long was president of the student body. Long is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and received his commission into the United States Army through this ROTC program. Long began serving in Vietnam in September of 1968. While in Vietnam Bill Long served in the infantry as the Platoon Leader for the Third Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion, 61st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized).

Lieutenant Bill Long was killed in action on 20 June 1969 and was awarded the Bronze Star with first Oak Leaf Cluster for service and second Oak Leaf Cluster for valor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantrymen Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Long also recieved the National Order of Vietnam medal.
