Scope and Contents
Over five linear feet of books, comic books, photographs, slides, audio, maps, posters, artifacts, periodicals, and documents detail medical conditions, field surgery, and Vietnamese culture during the early 1960s, during which time Colonel Michael Mittelmann served from March 1965 to March 1966 as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of Professional Services in the 8th Field Hospital in Nha Trang, Vietnam. The collection documents Colonel Mittelmann's military career, as well as his postwar medical career and advocacy work. The materials include military orders; memos and correspondence; papers (including drafts); articles, and clippings; website printouts; flyers, pamphlets, booklets, and brochures; notes; reports (including clinical case reports and physical evaluation board findings); tables of organization and equipment; subject schedules; briefings; Orthopedic Detachment (KB) histories, logistics, and equipment lists; presentations (notes, transparencies); medical records; manuals; Vietnamese language instructional materials; log sheets; medical/hospital information sheets and SOPs; travel vouchers; and ephemera. Materials of particular interest are the USARV Medical Bulletins and images of wounds before and after surgery. The materials are dated predominately 1954-1969, 1973-1977, and 1982-2004.Biographical / Historical
