Scope and Contents
Van Michael Davidson served as an advisor in Vietnam from July 1970 to June 1971. The collection consists of documents, photographs, serials, newspapers and a framed Viet Cong flag document. Documents include photocopies of articles and news clippings, correspondence with Secretary of the Navy James Webb, Presidents Nixon and Reagan and other government officials; Information on Vietnam Veterans memorial fund, 1981; Information on Louisiana Vietnam Veterans Memorial fund, 1984-1986; unpublished manuscript: A Journey to Geneva, A Vietnam Memoir by Van Davidson (2000); Legacies of Vietnam: Comparative Adjustment of Veterans and their peers, March 1981; letter to Peter Braestrup (January 16, 1985); and a letter from Frank McCarthy (October 1, 1970) detail Davidson's experiences related to Vietnam.The collection also includes an Interview with Van Davidson which he contributed to the VNCA Oral History Project in August 2004.
Biographical / Historical
Van Michael Davidson, originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971 and from 1974 to 1981 and in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1971 to 1973 and again from 1981 until 1996. In South Vietnam, he served as an Advisor to the ARVN 9th Armor Division in July 1970 and then as IV Corps Information Officer with MACV Team 96 in Can Tho from July 1970 until June 1971. He returned to the U.S. in 1971 and went on to obtain a law degree from the University of Mississippi and practice law for the U.S. Army and in the private sector.Series
