Biographical / Historical

Jacob L. Schloss was born on May 19, 1936 (Toppenish, Washington). He volunteered for the United States Air Force in 1955 and spent a total of six years in service throughout Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. Schloss was assigned to the 6102 Air Base Wing (Yokota Air Base, Japan) from the years of 1956-1958. He was never involved in any major events, engagements or campaigns in Vietnam or Southeast Asia and therefore did not receive any Vietnam service awards or medals. At the time of his military discharge he held the rank of Airman First Class (A1C).

Following his military service, Schloss worked as a teacher and principal for the Taipei American School (Taiwan) from 1966-1968 and then for the Air America School (Udorn, Thailand) from 1968-1970. Schloss said: 'My association with Air America was through the school. I and my staff were connnected, but we were only there for bringing normality to bear. We taught the children and were plugged into an organization with a totally different mission. It was a very unique and rewarding experience!'
