Scope and Contents
Approximately 14 linear feet of books, maps, museum objects, microforms, personal papers, documents from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and other foreign archives, government-related publications, miscellaneous publications, photocopied books, and photocopied journal articles document the various research topics of Basil Rauch, who specialized in the studying Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. The materials center primarily on American diplomatic and military history involving Vietnam during the Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower Administrations. Thus the dates of the materials begin around 1939 and end around 1983 with the bulk of the materials discussing the situation in Vietnam from World War II through the early 1960s. The materials are primarily in the English language, though there are documents in both Vietnamese and French.Various preservation photocopies have been made for the original materials due to their poor condition upon arrival at the Vietnam Archive.
Biographical / Historical
Professor Basil Rauch specialized in the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He published numerous books on the subject, including The History of the New Deal (1944); American Interest in Cuba, 1848-1855 (1948); Roosevelt from Munich to Pearl Harbor: A Study in the Creation of a Foreign Policy (1950); and, co-authored works with Dumas Malone - Empire for Liberty: The Genesis and Growth of the United States of America. Professor Rauch taught at Barnard College and Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1947. The collection was donated by Professor Rauch's wife, Elizabeth Hird, who contacted Professor Douglas Pike in February 1997. Professor Pike, who had recently begun the transfer of his collection to The Vietnam Archive, contacted Dr. James R. Reckner. Dr. Reckner and Ms. Hird agreed that Professor Rauch's collection should come to Texas Tech University and in February 1998 Dr. Ronald B. Frankum retrieved the collection from Ms. Hird's home in Connecticut.- 1
