Approximately 0.25 linear foot of slides and one document from Richard P. Carmody's 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, July 1965-Dec 1966 with the 2/17th Artillery Battalion at An Khe, and 1969-1970 with the 23rd Artillery Group and 1/27th Artillery at Phu Loc (1969) and Tay Ninh (1970).

Biographical / Historical

Richard P. Carmody was born in 1942 in Chicago, IL. He entered the United States Army through the ROTC program in 1964. Carmody did a total of eight years of active duty with two years of those years in Southeast Asia. He was assigned to various units throughout his military career including 2/17th Artillery Battalion from 1964-1966, July 1965 - December 1966 at An Khe, RVN; Basic Training Brigade, Fort Campbell, KY from 1966-1968; Field Artillery Office Advanced Course, Fort Sill, OK from 1968-1969; 23rd Artillery Group and 1/27th Artillery Vietnam from 1969-1970; and instructed ROTC at Davidson College Davidson, NC from 1970-1972.

While in Vietnam he held the positions of Assistant S-3, Battalion Fire Direction Officer in 1965 and Battery XO in 1966 with the 2/17th Artillery Battalion, then was the Assistant S-3, Field Artillery Group in 1969 with the 23rd Artillery Group at Phu Loc, and Battery CO in 1970 with the 1/27th Artillery Battalion in Tay Ninh. In November 1965 Carmody participated in the battle of Ia Drang Valley.

During his army career Carmody received numerous awards and citations including three Bronze Stars, four Army Commendation Medals including one for valor, an Air Medal, and a President Unit Citation. He served in Army until retiring in 1972 at the rank of Captain. After the Army, Carmody pursued his law degree from Vanderbilt University and has practiced law for thirty-four years.
