Scope and Contents
The collection consists of approximately nine linear feet of materials including books, periodicals, newsletters, video, DVDs, photographs, reunion information, memos/correspondence, articles/clippings, artifacts, and ephemera documenting Louis Rios' service with the Americal Division (Company A, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division) in the Vietnam War, and his membership in the Americal Division Veterans Association after the war. The collection also includes flyers and pamphlets; records re: the Agent Orange Veteran Payment Program; mailing lists; service records; military orders; award citations; recommendation letters; journal transcripts; website printouts; certificates; VA claims and disability rating decision records; award entitlement verification records; medical records; and financial records.Biographical / Historical
Louis Phillip Rios was born in Santa Barbara, California in 1945. He was drafted in 1968 in the United States Army where he served one year and ten months of active duty service with Company A 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Americal Division. While with A Co. 1/20th Rios served as a squad leader in Duc Pho, Vietnam. He participated in combat mission out of Ha Thanh with Special Forces in 1968. During his service in Vietnam he received many Awards and Citations including Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. He retired due to medical reasons in 1969 at the rank of Specialist.Rios currently belongs to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Americal Division Veterans Association, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. After the military he worked for the United States Postal Office for thirty-three years.
