Biographical / Historical
Craig L. Smith was born in 1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He volunteered for the United States Army in 1966. Smith served four years in the U.S. Army, with one year in Southeast Asia. He was assigned to various units including HHC Second Brigade, 101st Airborne Division; 17th Assault Helicopter Company; and B Company, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne. While in Vietnam, Smith was stationed at Cuchi, Pau Bai, Bien Hoa, and Camp Eagle. He held the ranks of Warrant Officer and Chief Warrant Officer during his service in Vietnam. His service in Vietnam awards include the Purple Heart, Air Medal with V Device, and Bronze Star.

In 1971 Smith was discharged from the regular army and commissioned first in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1971 to 1983, and then in Army Reservefrom 1983 to 1996. In 1996 Smith retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4). He is currently an active member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.
