Biographical / Historical
Dennis Hackin was born 3 June 1945 at Chicago, Illinois. He volunteered for service in the US Army on 23 March 1967. He was assigned to the Infantry, and served with Charlie Company, 5th Mechanized, 2nd Platoon 2nd and 3rd Squad stationed out of Cu Chi with the 25th Division, III Corps. Hackin was in Vietnam from September 1967-August 1968. He worked as a Radio Telephone Operator, Walked Point, was a rifleman, an M-79 grenadier, and as a Track Driver. Hackin was promoted from PFC to Specialist 4 during his Vietnam service. He was involved in the 1st Tet Offensive, 14-19 February 1968 at Hoc Mon Village; 2nd mini Tet, May 1968, outside of Saigon; 3rd Tet, August 1968, at Ben Cui Rubber Plantation near Dau Tieng; and Hackin hit a landmine on 31 March 1968, at HoBo Woods as a particpant in Operation Saratoga. Hackin was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, and the Purple Heart. He was discharged on 23 March 1969 with the rank of ^D<'Buck^D>' Sergeant (E-5) with 3 stripes. Following his military service, he became a playwrite, screenwriter, novelist, and father. He is a member of the Charlie Company 5th Mechanized Bobcats.
