Scope and Contents
Over two linear feet of books, photographs, negatives, slides, maps, Army artifacts, audio reels, periodicals, reports and sheet music document Edward P. Metzner's service as a U.S. Army advisor to ARVN troops (Republic of Vietnam Army), 1964-1974. The bulk of the materials are from the war period. Items of note include 1945 sheet music in Vietnamese for the anthem of Vietnam and reports on psychological operations in various province in Vietnam.
Biographical / Historical
Colonel Metzner served as Psychological Warfare/Pacification Advisor to the ARVN 7th Infantry Division from 1964 to 1965. From January to July 1967, he was Pacification Advisor to the ARVN II Corps. He then served as Province Senior Advisor in four provinces, in Dinh Tuong from July to December 1967, in Chuong Thien from December 1967 to August 1968, in Kien Giang and Vinh Binh from January 1970 to May 1971 and again in Kien Giang from June 1972 to February 1973. His final assignment from March 1973 to August 1974 was as Chief of the Liaison Section to the Vietnamese Joint General Staff for the Defense Attache Office of the U.S. Embassy.

148museum0212: 4 Flags (Flags distributed to Village and Hamlet families by the provincial chief (on order from Saigon) shortly after the 1973 ceasefire agreement to identify territory under GVN control. A land grab was anticipated and attempted by the Viet Cong, with NLF flags also distributed. When each side torn down the other's flag, the flags were then painted on villagers' houses in response.
