Scope and Contents

The collection consists of publications documenting field data collected on Vietnamese junks, as well as Vietnamese and Thai coastal vessels. Also included is a Vietnamese language training booklet.

Biographical / Historical

Ben Freudenreich was born on 22 February 1939 at Pittsburg, PA. He was an employee of Battelle Memorial Institute, in Columbus, OH, which sent him to Saigon under the Remote Area Conflict Information Center, sponsored by the Department of Defense in June 1965. Late in 1965, Freudenreich was asked to remain in Saigon as Deputy Project Manager on a task to update and expand upon the 'Junk Blue Book' that was prepared in 1962 by Col. Dalby. His product from this project was the 'Blue Book of Coastal Vessels-South Vietnam,' which was published in 1967. Freudenreich worked in Saigon until January 1967, and then transferred to Bangkok where he worked until September 1967. After his return to the U.S., Freudenreich continued to work for Battelle on projects sponsored by the United States Air Force.
