Biographical / Historical
William G. Meffert, M.D. has had a long and successful surgical career, which included service in the U.S. Army. He received his undergraduate degree at Duke University in 1958, and went to medical school at Yale University, graduating in 1962. Dr. Meffert conducted his Surgical Residency at Yale-New Haven Medical Center from 1962-1968, and was an instructor at Yale's medical school between 1967 and 1968. He served one year in Southeast Asia, at the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang (1968-1969) where he was the thoracic and vascular surgeon who dealt with traumatic injuries of that nature. Meffert spent the next year at Fort Ord, before he was discharged from the Army with the rank of Major. Following his military service, Meffert returned to civilian hospital service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is Board Certified in General and Thoracic Surgery, and was able to advance surgical methods while in Iowa. He is a member of several medical societies, including A.M.A., and has had the opportunity to go on numerous surgical missions to Haiti, Russia, and China. Dr. Meffert has been published in medical journals, and AOPA Pilot Magazine. Following his retirement from his medical career, he has worked with USAID as an exchange Doctor, and has worked for Habitat for Humanity. He is a certified commercial aviator and flight instructor, and has taken creative writing workshops at Stanford.
