Scope and Contents

Approximately three and a half linear feet of military and Vietnam related periodicals, books, comic books and pamphlets donated by John. R. Cox. The collection also includes manuscript materials like military training manuals and handbooks, a 1970 US Naval Air Facility Cam Ranh Bay yearbook and a news clipping, along with several slides and photographs depicting Cam Ranh Bay, China Beach and Honolulu, Hawaii taken by John Cox during his tour in Vietnam. The materials date from 1961 through 1995.

Biographical / Historical

John R. Cox was born in Guymon, Oklahoma in 1947. He was drafted to the United States Army in 1969 where he subsequently served for six years, one year and nine months of which he spent serving in Southeast Asia. While in Vietnam he served as a Specialist at the U.S. Army Base in Cam Ranh with the 518th Adjutant General Personnel Service Company where he held the Computer System Operator position. During his service, he was involved in the Counteroffensive Phase VII Campaign. Cox was ranked as a Specialist 5 when he was honorably discharged in 1975. He received the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. After his military service, Cox attended college at Stephen F. Austin State University where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science and Accounting. He is currently a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, and The American Legion, Travis Post 76.
